4th Axis Setup

  1. Set preferences... [File] [Preferences]
    Chuck diameter and depth to material from collection point need to be set in preferences.
    Lathe Chuck Depth is used to determine the distance to default the offset from the Front Chuck Collection point to the Material start point.
    Pick a spot on your lathe chucks where you can consistently line up the chuck with the depth, and measure from that point to the material.
    Ensure there is enough space to compensate so the bit and router fittings will not hit the lathe or lathe chuck when [move to Offset] is clicked.
  2. Collecting Points...
    The reason for collecting points is to allow a straight cut when the lathe is unlevel, and to allow a person to cut diagonally when the lathe is on the deck of the CNC, so a larger cut than the length of the deck can be made.

    Collect points at each end of the lathe on the chucks using the red dots in the jog window...

    Use the jog panel to move to the rear lathe chuck...
    Line up router so it points directly at center of rear lathe chuck
    side lathe on right --> [space] ( o ) or ( o ) [space] < -- side lathe on left
    once lined up back up the router from the lathe leaving [space] for touchplate

    click the red rear button to collect the point

    Use the jog panel to move to the front lathe chuck...
    Line up router so it points directly at center of front lathe chuck
    side lathe on right --> [space] ( o ) or ( o ) [space] < -- side lathe on left
    once lined up back up the router from the lathe leaving [space] for touchplate

    click the red front button to collect the point
  3. Last step is to collect the offset at the material cutting start point.
    Click [Move to Offset], and the system will move out the chuck depth very close to the center of the material at that point, but out the distance equal to the [Front Lathe Chuck Radius] + [AAxis Safe height] + [AAxis Touchplate Thickness]
    If the cutting material is larger than the default offset distance, the offset can be set manually...
    Move the lathe to the material cut start point. Material cut start point point should be to the rear of the [Front Lathe Chuck].
    After getting in position, Set the offset...
    Have the touchplate ready, and Click [Set Offset].
    Now you're ready to load the cut file and run the program.
    Note: [Detect Touchplate] is not setup to be used on the new 4th Axis process.
  4. Safety Notes...
    Run an air test before loading and cutting any material to verify that you are happy with the movements.
    If you have moved the lathe or the CNC when loading the material, retouch off the rear and front chucks as in step II above.
    After loading material, reset the Offset as shown in step III above.
